Does it look bad on your credit report to settle a debt with a creditor?

Even if the amount you settled on is more than the amount of your purchases? Basically the money I am not wanting to pay is interest. Will this affect my credit poorly in the future?

Sorry, but the three people who have posted aren%26#039;t entirely correct.

If you settle an account, it WILL show up on your credit bureaus as %26quot;creditor accepted less than amount due%26quot;.

HOWEVER, that shouldn%26#039;t stop you! It looks a lot better to a company looking to finance something for you in the future if you made a payment arrangement rather than just letting the account completely go (a chargeoff). Also, the impact on your credit will not be nearly as severe.

Good luck!

No as long as the debt is paid off it removes a black mark from your report.

Actually it will show that you are willing to make payments. Chances are if you had to resort to consulting with a creditor, your credit is pretty much shot for a while anyway. It%26#039;s still better than filing for bankruptcy, but you are going to have to find a way of building your credit back up. Try getting a secured credit card and making small purchases and paying them off right away.

If they are willing to settle, then they will also be willing to remove the late charges and increased interest. As long as you are willing to pay the actual amount and a little interest, they will be happy. Also, if you are having financial difficulty they may offer to settle for 60% of the amount they want now. Once they accept a settlement, there is no mark against your credit. Although there might be late payment notices on your history.
